Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025

June 6, 2025

The 8th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction was help in Geneva on June 2-6, 2025.   It was attended by 3000 participants from 164 countries. The theme of the meeting was “Every Day Counts, Act for Resilience Today."  The main closing output of the meeting, called the Co-Chair's Summary, reported "encouraging and impactful progress" toward implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, but that the "pace of disasters, both catastrophic and high-frequency low-impact events" continues to accelerate.   It reports that earthquakes, floods, storms, droughts and heatwaves are responsible for over 95% of direct disaster losses.   The Co-Chair's Summary concludes with 8 critical needs for guiding efforts to implement the Sendai Framework over the next five years: 1) better data to understand risk; 2) use technology to leapfrog progress; 3)  promote integrated risk governance and coooperation; 4) invest in prevention; 5) risk-inform all investments; 6) scale-up early warning systems; 7) leave no one behind; and 8) build back better.
