The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released a report that predicts an "80 percent likelihood that the annual average global temperature will temporarily exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for at least one of the next five years" (WMO Media Release, June 5, 2024) and an 86% chance that one of these years will exceed the record temperatures of 2023. The 1.5°C threshold is important because nations who signed the Paris Agreement pledged to try to keep temperature increases below that level. Here is a link to the report:
