The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported that the EPA and the Department of Justice had reached a $310 million settlement with Norfolk Southern for the February, 2023 train derailement in East Palestine, Ohio. During the incident, thirty-eight freight cars derailed, dumping vinyl chloride and other hazardous materials. Nearly 70 emergency agencies were mobilized to the respond to the derailment and a 1x2 mile area was evacuated (Wikipedia, "East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment").
